The Crab Nebula
This supernova remnant is the first item in Messier's list of objects. Often called the Crab Nebula it is 6300 light years away in the constellation of Taurus. It was discovered by the British astronomer John Bevis in 1731. According to history, the supernova was itself recorded by chinese astronomers in 1054.
