M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy
The Whirlpool, one of the classic spiral galaxies. It is interacting with its smaller neighbour NGC5195 and the gravitational forces are distorting both galaxies.
M51 is located in Canes Venatici, the hunting dogs, and was discovered in 1845 by Lord Rosse. At only 11 x 7 arc mins it is not the largest of objects for a small scope but is well worth the effort required. This image was taken using two different arrangements, details below:
